Jonathan Georges Henault: From music industry to head of brand at Kentico

Our Head of Brand and Content Strategy, Jonathan Georges Henault, has had an unconventional career path that led him to Kentico. His journey from the fast-paced music industry to shaping our brand is a story of creativity, and the willingness to embrace change. In this interview, he shares insights on marketing, leadership, and why a flexible mindset is key to success.

The journey to Kentico.

What brought you, a Frenchman, to the Czech Republic?

Actually, the story starts with a fact that not a lot of people know about me. For 10 years I worked as a tour manager, going on tour with rock and punk bands all around the world. But the constant travel and lack of a social life took a toll. Eventually, I started teaching, but after a certain time, it became monotonous, and I needed a change.

Seeking adventure and a change of pace, I first thought about moving to Ireland. However, even if they might be my favorite people in the world, I soon realized that life on an island felt limiting.  Remembering my fun experiences in Prague while on tour, I decided to relocate to the heart of Europe, which offered both adventure and opportunities.

Your career is pretty diverse. Without a doubt, you've had to overcome many obstacles. What was the most significant lesson you've learned?

If my diverse career path has given me something, it's a unique perspective on marketing. You don't just need money in marketing; you need brains. Creativity, strategy, and a solid plan to make it work.  Then you realize that nothing is impossible. You need to be smart, nurture yourself, and if you focus on the goal, you will achieve it!

And always go the extra mile! During my tenure at Xerox, for example, I created a comprehensive database of devices to assist the sales team, an initiative that streamlined workflows and showcased my proactive approach, which helped me gain a team leader position.

Never been bored.

Often you say marketing isn’t exactly life or death. What does this saying actually mean to you, and where does it come from?

Oh yes! It’s one of my favorite sayings. While deadlines are important, maintaining a positive attitude and focusing on efficiency over urgency is key. And that's maybe one of the reasons why I have been with Kentico for 4 years already. This philosophy aligns with Kentico's flexible work culture. Unlimited vacation or use your Friday well are benefits that value work-life balance and innovation over rigid schedules.

You have grown in Kentico for the last 4 years a lot, all the way to the Head of Brand. What do you love the most about your job?

That’s true, I've grown significantly within Kentico over the past four years. I attribute my success to the company's flexibility and opportunities for career advancement. I've never been bored at Kentico; I always find a way to make my days fun. The ability to propose and implement new ideas keeps me engaged and motivated.

As Head of Brand at Kentico, what would be your best advice about raising brand awareness for other companies?

I believe that building brand awareness requires a global vision. Companies should avoid focusing on just one aspect at a time, such as PR or social media. Instead, I recommend continuous efforts across all channels and being unafraid to experiment. Never be afraid to fail—question yourself and your strategy all the time.

What makes Kentico stand out?

I think that Kentico has amazing leadership. Take, for example, our CEO, Dominik, who started as a tester and worked all the way up. His deep understanding of the product and the industry contributes to Kentico's success. Also, Debbie, our VP of Product, is a very strong vision creator for Kentico.

Managing work, mile by mile.

Jonathan, how many tabs do you currently have open with different Jira tickets and other tasks? Can you share how this helps you manage your work?

I believe that finding a system that fits your workflow is crucial. For me, its browser tabs. What is a priority goes to the right, what is not on fire goes to the left. And Friday is my deadline for clearing tabs—it helps me stay organized and focused. After work, I can now always clear my head with a run.

That's right, you recently got into running! What are the benefits of running for you?

To be honest, it helps me a lot to maintain a work-life balance. It pushes me now to achieve better results and to challenge myself. But it also taught me to be a little bit humbler and not try to climb hills. After my last run on Brno Castle Spielberg, my knee started hurting from the hill's incline.

But otherwise, running gives me structure and forces me to prioritize my time better. Running has become an essential part of my routine, helping me clear my mind and stay productive.

Do you have any hobbies aside from running?

I'm a big rugby fan, actuallyThat's the only sport I can't play because I'm too small. The team from Bordeaux (UBB) is my favorite, and we are going to win the next World Cup with the French national team!
